Siege of Verres

Written by Cattaneo Andrea | Jan 16, 2025 11:14:46 PM

The shadow of war fell upon the verdant valleys of Magica Vallee. The armies amassed, a tide of steel and sorcery converging upon the impregnable fortress of Verres. For three days, the slopes around Cascina Barmaz, a formidable stronghold resembling a miniature castle, swelled with warriors. Knights in shining armor, dwarves clad in steel, and elves shimmering with arcane grace marched alongside fearsome orcs and shadowy creatures of the night. The gathered heroes, a diverse assembly of seasoned adventurers, spent a week meticulously crafting their strategy to breach the castle's defenses. Verres, perched defiantly upon its rocky peak, presented a formidable challenge. Not only did its towering walls defy assault, but Ybleto di Challand, the odious kidnapper, commanded a formidable aerial defense.

First day of Gathering:

The first to arrive were the loyal soldiers of the Lord of Nus, their hearts burning with a fierce desire to rescue their lady from Ybleto's clutches. Mounted on majestic deer, each pair consisted of a stalwart knight wielding a long spear and a nimble scout, ready to track any sign of the enemy. Close behind came the Vallaise, elite warriors sworn to the Emperor. The formidable Walser Dwarves, renowned for their impenetrable defenses, marched in an imposing wall of steel, while the more agile human troops prepared to infiltrate the castle's depths. The Vachery de la Tour and the Bosses, fearsome half-orcs renowned for their knowledge of the treacherous mountain passes, joined the growing army. Preceded by a light drizzle, as if summoned by the heavens, came the clerics of the Pleuve family, revered by the valley folk for their ability to mitigate droughts. Then, in their distinctive black and yellow armor, the soldiers of the Jovencan family made their presence known. Bearing invaluable maps of the castle's interior, provided by their brothers within Ybleto's ranks, they were followed by the enigmatic "black guards" of the Tour de Granciano, their dark uniforms mirroring the arrival of a contingent of fearsome Dark Dwarves from the subterranean depths.

Second day of Gathering:

The second day dawned with the arrival of the heavily armored knights of the Avise family. Their ranks were soon joined by a horde of orcs, dispatched by the formidable Pietro di Montmayeur, their ferocity matching the Avise knights in intensity. The Vachery and the Bosses, drawn to the prospect of battle, established their camp near the orcs, preparing for the conflict with feasts of blood and strange, potent berries. The arrival of the sinister forces of Bard/Pont Saint Martin was heralded by the thunderous beat of drums and the eerie sight of small knights accompanied by flying scarabs. Among their ranks, a disturbing sight emerged: a group of clerics with goat-like limbs and bird-like faces, their presence shrouded in an unsettling aura. The final arrivals of the day were the exuberant guides of the Curia Majoris, their white and gold uniforms a stark contrast to the grim determination that now permeated the camp.

Third day of Gathering:

On the third day, a small band of halflings, riding upon the backs of colossal wolves, emerged from the depths of the forest, bearing the blessings of Bishop Fieschi and offering their aid in the impending conflict. Their arrival seemed to awaken the very spirit of the forest itself, as numerous elven contingents appeared, each with their own unique style and accompanied by ethereal beings of the fey realm. Among the elves were skilled rangers, agile explorers, and powerful sorcerers, as well as warriors clad in shimmering, enchanted armor. Finally, the armies of Pietro "the Beautiful," Ybleto's own brother, arrived, their uniforms bearing the distinctive crescent of the Pietro's branch within Challant family.

The Strategy:

For a week, the assembled heroes poured over maps and reports, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of Ybleto's forces. A daring plan was devised: the main force would launch a frontal assault, utilizing a secret path to reach the heart of the castle's southern defenses. Simultaneously, a smaller group, consisting of the swift elves and the resourceful clerics of Pleuve, would exploit the enemy's distraction. Concealed within illusory clouds, they would infiltrate the castle through a poorly guarded service entrance, guiding the heroes towards their objective. However, a critical challenge remained: overcoming the formidable defenses guarding the entrance to the secret path – a heavily fortified cave. Recognizing that the Jovencan soldiers and the forces of the De Granciano often frequented the castle, a bold decision was made: to infiltrate the cave and neutralize the enemy guards within, effectively opening the path for the main assault.

The Attack Without Banners:

At dawn on the seventh day, the army prepared for the assault. All insignia and identifying marks were removed, transforming the assembled warriors into a formidable force of outcasts, free from the constraints of feudal loyalty. As they approached the entrance, the vanguard discovered that the infiltrated Jovencan officers had already accomplished their mission. The gate lay wide open, held ajar by a contingent of soldiers in red and gray uniforms, while the remaining guards were bound and gagged within the cave. The invaders surged forward, their ranks stretching along the steep path. A natural bank and a dense line of trees concealed their approach from the defenders, who were positioned higher on the slope. The elven enchanters, weaving their magic, enhanced the natural cover, creating a near-impenetrable veil of vegetation. The first wave of the assault consisted of elite snipers from the Nus forces, burning with a fierce desire to avenge their lady. They emerged from the hidden path and found themselves at the foot of the castle walls, where Ybleto's guards held a strong defensive position, protected by battlements, loopholes, and a formidable embankment. The ensuing battle was a bloody affair. One by one, the invaders fell under a hail of arrows and bolts, their ranks decimated by the relentless fire of the Challant defenders. From the castle's heights, aerial reinforcements descended upon the attackers. Harpies, commanding fearsome creatures of the air such as Roc and Tengu, swooped down upon the beleaguered invaders. The decimated Nus forces were swiftly replaced by the warriors of the lower valley: the Bard/Pont Saint Martin and the Vallaise. The exchange of projectiles and spells intensified, and the ground soon became littered with the fallen, both attackers and defenders. The lightly armored aerial forces, lacking adequate protection, suffered heavy losses under the relentless barrage of the attachers.

The Advance of the Shields:

The losses mounted, and the invaders were pushed to the brink of defeat. Only the "shields" of the Vallaise remained, their heavy armor and broad shields providing a measure of protection against the relentless onslaught. The battle raged on, a desperate struggle for survival. Finally, in a moment of decisive action, the Dwarves unleashed a volley of crossbow bolts, inflicting heavy casualties upon the defenders. This unexpected blow allowed the invaders to seize a temporary advantage, breaking through the southern defenses and marking the end of the first phase of the attack on the Castle of Verres.
